Surroundings
In the South of the Marche Region, Ascoli Piceno is ready to show its historical centre entirely built from marble called Travertino. Located between Monti Sibillini and the Adriatic sea, this small and unexpected city is considered to be the Marche's hidden gem.
There is plenty of grand architecture and the lovely cafè-lined central square, Piazza del Popolo (typical meeting point for people of Ascoli), is appreciated as one of the most beautiful renaissance squares of Italy. Here, it is possible to visit the Palazzo dei Capitani and the scenic gothic style church of "San Francesco". The Palazzo dei Capitani dates back to the 13th century and was the seat of the "Podestà" (the People's Captains), and later of the Papal governors.
The other most popular attraction in the city is Piazza Arringo, located just a few minutes away from Piazza del Popolo. The square has been the political heart of the town for centuries, with its Palazzo dell'Arengo (the City Hall), the Cathedral of Sant'Emidio and the Palazzo Vescovile (the Bishop's Residence).
The Cathedral of Sant'Emidio, houses an altarpiece by Carlo Crivelli. Piazza Arringo is also known for its museums (the Pinacoteca Civica with masterpieces by Tiziano and Guido Reni, the Museo Diocesano and the Archeological Museum). Moreover, according to traditional accounts, Ascoli Piceno was home to more than two hundred medieval towers which spread through the city's old town: today some fifty can still be seen.
Not far from the town there are some interesting seaside towns like San Benedetto del Tronto, Cupra Marittima and Grottammare. We recommend that you do not miss visiting Offida, known as "one of the most beautiful villages in Italy" with its fabulous church of Santa Maria della Rocca and Acquaviva Picena with its 15th century fortress.
